Me and Arabella Marie

My beloved grandniece and playmate today was 4-year-old Arabella Marie. Her little brother was born five days before Christmas, so her life’s been busy, and she’s still adjusting to a new baby in town.

She is such an affectionate child, and I’m so blessed to be her aunt. Over and over today, she told me she loved me, she was glad to be at my house, and she hugged me countless times, which was wonderful, because I'm a firm believer in hugs.

At the park, we laughed, and talked, and rode the merry-go-round till we got dizzy. She climbed up this, slid down that and tried to catch a squirrel.

As I was securing her in the car for the ride home, my heart did a little flip when she looked at me with those tootsie-roll colored eyes and said, “I’m sorry you live alone.” The words came from out of nowhere, but I could tell she felt them in her little heart, so I kissed her cheek and told her she was mighty sweet, but Aunt Gayle was just thankful she lived so close to her.

Back at the house, we colored for a while, and then she wanted to do play dough cut-outs of her little family: Father, Mother, Sister and Baby Brother. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
